Blogs.trb.com - BannaStrow’s, a Miami-based crepes concept, is looking to expand in South Florida in a unique way. The restaurant, which specializes in crepes of every kind, is looking to add 25 new locations in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties this year, said BannaStrow’s CEO, Mauricio Acevedo.

The newest store opened inside the Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation last week. Those interested in owning a franchise of the BannaStrow’s name have options to choose from. BannaStrow’s can be a fast casual restaurant concept, a kiosk in a mall, an in-line quick service spot, a catering business or even a food truck. “When we started this concept in 2002, we asked ourselves what does a successful food concept need to have,” Acevedo said. “It needs to be easy to operate.” Out of the seven BannaStrow’s locations open today, two are mall kiosks and five are in food court settings. A location in Wellington on Forest Hill Boulevard opened this month and another is set to open in Tampa Bay.

Crepes are a French food concept, which look like a thin pancake and are made of wheat flour. Crepes are served with a variety of fillings, usually fruit.

TBO.com – In the next few months, the restaurant company started by those who founded Outback Steakhouse will grow from a first prototype site in Tampa to at least four more across Tampa Bay, with an additional four possible by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, other Outback founders are targeting whole regions in North Carolina and South Florida.

“We were pretty confident about what we had to start,” said Steve Erickson, president of PDQ. “But, knock on wood, it has been one of those things that was accepted very quickly, and there’s a market for it.”

PDQ opened its first spot in South Tampa late last year, aiming to sell a chicken sandwich a notch or two above a typical Chick-fil-A one, but in a more upscale dining atmosphere akin to a Panera Bread. Continue

Floridarestaurantlaw.blogspot.com -It’s the food fight of the century for all the egg rolls.

Chow v. Chow. Teacher versus student. Legend against upstart.

And it all goes down in a Miami federal courtroom beginning Monday, when a jury must grapple with this fundamental question: What’s in a name?
Among the potential witnesses: none other than former Miami Heat cornerstone Alonzo Mourning.
In one corner — Michael Chow, aka “Mr. Chow,” the creator and owner of the eponymous chain of upscale Chinese restaurants.
In the other — Philippe Chow, 53, a former Michael Chow disciple (and no relation) who went out on his own seven years ago. With the financial backing of restaurateur Stratis Morfogen and several famous athletes, he opened similarly swanky Asian cuisine restaurants intended to compete with Mr. Chow in New York, Los Angeles and South Beach.
The name of his growing empire: Philippe by Philippe Chow. Continue

Sarasota’s Snook Haven Cafe in debt to county

WTSP.com – Venice, Florida – Sitting along the Myakka River in Venice, you’ll find what some may think is long gone.

“It’s a taste of old Florida you don’t always find it,” says Joan Vetter, a Sarasota resident.

“It’s charming,” adds Seattle visitor Diane Bowers.

Since 1948 Sarasota County has owned Snook Haven, a fishing camp along one of Florida’s wild and scenic rivers. Bowers says, “I love being here. You can’t feed the alligators, there are raccoons running around… to me this speaks of Florida.”

And in the park is Snook Haven Cafe. It’s a popular place, but the restaurant has fallen prey to financial problems, owing the county more than $40,000 in rent dating back to May.

“It was the economy. The oil spill hurt, but it comes down to mismanagement,” says Jonathan Davis. He took over the restaurant in October as general manager and executive chef Continue

thepacker.com – TAMPA, Fla. — The economy is affecting Florida distributors in different ways. In a state heavily dependent on tourism, some wholesalers report slow or weak foodservice sales, while others, particularly in south Florida, report strong business.

While weekday restaurant business often remains slower than normal, weekends sizzle, especially at the concerts and comedy shows at places such as the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood  casino, said Bruce Fishbein, partner in The Produce Connection Inc., Miami.

“It’s insane,” he said. “Friday and Saturday nights, it’s standing room only. It’s interesting that the whole deal on South Beach, at Hard Rock and over on Las Olas Boulevard (in Fort Lauderdale), all the areas over the weekend, you wouldn’t know there is any kind of recession going on. You would think everyone is out having a good time.”

Despite a challenging economy, U.S. Foodservice Inc., Rosemont, Ill., is experiencing increased sales. Continue

wtsp.com HERNANDO, Fla. – Residents say there are only about three sit down restaurants in the entire tiny town of Hernando. So when a state inspector came to town and shut down Frank’s Family Restaurant at2780 North Florida Avenue, it was bad news for loyal customers.

“I’ve never seen anything out here to indicate they had a problem, and I was surprised, to be honest with you, that they had a problem,” said one every day customer.

Turns out inspectors with Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation found 23 violations, 14 considered critical. They included dented/rusty cans of food, a refrigerator not keeping food at a properly cold temperature, a sugar scooper encrusted with soil deposits, and filthy kitchen floors. ALEXANDER’S

As a relative veteran—17 years—in Naples, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, this comfortable European-American bistro is known for its creative menu and top-notch ingredients. Chef/owner Alexander Bernard says he keeps his guests happy with new items, including blackberry Canadian elk strip loin ($35), and long-time favorites such as lobster bisque ($7 bowl), crispy duck ($28) and macadamia nut-crusted grouper ($29). He offers no daily deals.

GILT CLUB

Located in the historic Old Town district of Portland, Oregon, the Gilt Club is a play on words—gilt means gold plated and also a young, female pig. When the restaurant opened in 2005, it was known for hand-cut meats and pork rinds ($8). It has since garnered national attention, featuring an eclectic menu with unusual cocktails and entrées such as quail stuffed with foie gras ($23), a current favorite, says owner Jamie Dunn, who works with Groupon. Server gets finger broken for bringing check to table!

Consumerist.com – It is not unexpected to receive a check at the end of one’s meal, so we’re not sure why one diner at a restaurant in Florida was moved to such rage over getting the bill that he allegedly broke his server’s finger.

According to the Eater.com, he began ranting, yelling, “You schmuck, why did you bring the bill to the table?” He then grabbed the server’s left hand and began squeezing and twisting his fingers, according to the police.

The server says he was in pain and had his hand X-rayed at a walk-in clinic, which showed that his left ring finger was broken.

The cops aren’t taking further action yet, as the waiter says he’s going to speak with an attorney. The restaurant’s owner says his employees do what is asked of them by diners, and that they don’t have a policy as to how the check should be presented.
